Are you ready to cut the cord?
Amazon Video has never been high on my priorities. When looking for something new to watch I’d always go straight to Netflix. It was just so easy to use and the choice was and still is amazing. But we’re open minded here and with Amazon acquiring rights to great shows such as the Expanse and The Lord of the Rings we thought we would give it a chance.
And we discovered a lot more than we bargained for.
For most customers choice and value is key. People only pay for what they want to watch. They also don’t want long term commitments.
We always assumed to get the most out of Amazon Video you would need to subscribe to Prime. But relatively recently Amazon have added something called Amazon Channels. Simplified, it just means that instead of, or as well as using their free or Prime service, you can subscribe to” channels” such as Discovery, BFI Player or Tastemade plus. Some of these are available for the first time independently, as opposed to being part of a bundle on say Sky TV. The best part is that they all offer 30 day trials and can be cancelled at any time.
Let’s have a look at a couple of channels I tried personally and you decide whether this kind of no contract viewing is for you.
Discovery channel UK. £4.99 a month.
I’m a sucker for a good documentary, so this was perfect for me. The thing is, I also have a busy family life, so the 30 day free trial and the fact it’s no contract couldn’t be a better option. If I knew I wouldn’t have much time during the next month I’d just log on and cancel.
Eurosport £4.99 a month.
Not everyone is into football. There’s a wide array of sports that don’t necessarily get their dues on Sky Sports. Plus if you’re on a budget this might be the choice for you. I was very happy with options such Grand Slam tennis, cycling and winter sports.
MGM £3.99 a month.
This was one of my favourites. I’m obsessed with movies no matter how old they are, but to find a channel that has such a great selection of classics such as ‘2001 A Space Odyssey’, ‘Gone with the Wind’ and ‘Creed’ was a great discovery. Some of these are available on other platforms, but for nowhere near this price point.
I was surprised how much I liked this service. I pretty much only watch things On Demand and haven’t watched live TV in years. This was absolutely perfect for me. I’m honestly considering cancelling most of my other services and streamlining to just the services I actually watch.
For those that are looking to cut the cord Amazon Channels is a great place to start.
