Family movie review. Avengers Infinity War

Mostly Spoiler free, but beware.

On the morning of the day I was going to see this movie, I don’t think I’ve ever been as nervous about sitting down in a cinema in my life. I hadn’t read a single review about this movie. I stopped watching YouTube videos about it weeks ago. I was going in relatively clean. But as I woke up on the morning we were set to see it, I panicked. What if it wasn’t any good?

I’m a massive MCU fan. I’ve been waiting for this film ever since I saw Thanos grin at the end of the original Avengers movie. Could it possibly live up to the expectations I’ve been building up all these years? The answer is yes. Its not just great, but its probably the best movie Marvel have ever made.

If you’re not up to date with the MCU, Infinity War has no mercy. It throws you in at the end of Thor Ragnarok with almost no backstory. Characters appear on screen constantly with no introduction. Usually I would argue against this, but this is not a stand alone movie. Marvel have changed the game. This is the culmination of ten years of world building, where they did the heavy lifting when it came to developing characters years ago. Infinity war is about the pay off the fans deserve for helping this grow into a blockbuster machine. To be fair the movie does go in to some effort of explaining who Thanos is and why he’s doing what he’s doing. And honestly, that’s all you need at a base level. Knowing everything about previous MCU movies is just an added bonus for nerds like me.

Like all Avenger movies Stark is the heart of the film. Going back to the first Iron Man, Robert Downey Jnr has always been at the centre of the MCU. He such a great actor and gets better with every movie.  He can do funny and sarcastic, but when it comes down to it he can also nail the emotional side of the character. Another standout is Thor. With Ragnarok, Hemsworth showed that he had great comedy chops. In Infinity War he’s still super funny but also shows us a vulnerable side we’ve never seen from Thor before.

Of course all of the great action and comedy would mean nothing if the bad guy wasn’t up to scratch. In Thanos the MCU has found its best villain yet. Always criticized for its uninteresting and lifeless villains, Thanos along with Black Panther’s Killmonger, break the mould. Thanos is as bad as they come. He commits genocide like its nothing. He will kill anyone who gets in his way to finding the Infinity Stones. But still Marvel have found a way to have the audience have empathy for him. He is an absolute psychopath, yet the Russo brothers still find a way the audience to feel that although his methods are horrific, he had a point about certain things. He just happens to believe that wiping out half the universe, will cause the universe to re balance it self.  For this act of mass genocide he expects the universe will be grateful. Mad Titan indeed.

Speaking of the Russo brothers, what the directors have achieved with this movie is astonishing. Yes you may hope that some characters would have more screen time, but the way they have balanced the insane amount of characters on screen with all the story that needs to be told really is an amazing feat.

Mild spoilers past this point.

Infinity War is filled with amazing action, suspense and laughs. But its the last third that will last with you even after you have left the theatre. It sounds hyperbolic but the last psrt of this film is as good an ending you will see all year. It can never be said that Disney don’t have the guts to take risks. Its one of the bravest endings ever in movie history, let alone the MCU. Avengers Infinity War is an absolutely breath taking piece of movie making. An epic film with Marvel at the height of their powers, and an ending that will have you emotional for days.

Order this amazing movie right here.
